The City of Charlotte, which disposes of animals from Charlotte and the surrounding townships, typically spends between $75 and $80,000 a year in natural gas fees in order to dispose of over 137 tons of animals.  In an effort to reduce cost, the City got in touch with North Carolina State University's (NCU) Animal Division, which recommended the Lewiston, NC based company Biomass Marketing Associates (BMA).  BMA manufactures a gasification system that utilizes the animal fat of the carcasses to serve as fuel in a process called "cracking".  These units, which are much cleaner than traditional incinerators, have previously been employed by poultry and hog farms as a means of eliminating potentially hazardous animal waste.  Furthermore, the gasification process eliminates the issues associated with dumping partially treated waste in landfills and burying waste in the ground, as the ash leftover from the gasification process is free of any organic compound or microbe.  Charlotte is using the gasification system, which has been used over seas in smaller applications, for the first time in a large commercial operation with a city government.  Conservative estimates have suggested that the new system will reduce natural gas costs by 74%, or about 50,000 therms per year.  This translates into savings of about $55,000 per year.  With this rate of savings, the system will pay for itself in less than a year.
BMA has imporved it's units and increased it's efficiency since these testimonials.

"...I do believe the unit functions quite efficiently and is a excellent alternative to some of the less biosecure methods currently in use (rendering, disposal pit, composting) etc.)..."
